The
North Carolina Central University Women
and Mathematics Program hosted its annual
Marjorie Lee Browne Career Awareness Day
on March 8, 2002. Eighth grade girls from
Durham and Wake County public schools, along
with professional women mentors, spent the
day at the NCCU campus. Students had the
opportunity to participate in a variety
of math and science-related presentations,
demonstrations, discussions, and a math
competition. Topics included Population
Super Sleuths: Epidemiologists and the Publics
Health, Thinking about Balance and Imbalance,
Air Flow in the Virtual Mode, Hands-On Engineering,
and How Do We Know What Babies Think?
With support from the Michael & Laura
Brader-Araje Foundation, this math and science
career awareness program honors the late
Marjorie Lee Browne, the distinguished NCCU
faculty member and one of the first two
African-American women to earn a Ph.D. in
mathematics. Laura Brader-Araje is a mathematics
educator and has been actively involved
with the Women and Mathematics Program.
